What is the Gospel?

I wrote this up for a mission trip application and thought I would share:

The story, teachings and life of Jesus Christ. Romans 3:23 says "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". Since we have sinned we cannot have a personal relationship with God unless we establish a relationship with his one and only begotten son (John 3:16). Jesus is God's greatest gift to humanity. Jesus is the only way to have a relationship with God; for Jesus says "I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). It is not by our doings that we have a relationship with Jesus: Ephesians 2:8 says "For it is by grace through faith that you have been saved, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God". We must truly surrender all of our works, our striving to save ourselves, and acknowledge our sinfulness and repent so that we can establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
