Considerhumanism.org...huh?

Most recently, my friend Robert Hertha found an ad in the Atlanta Journal Constitution endorsed by Consider Humanism. After a little investigation I have found that Consider Humanism is apart of the American Humanist Association's marketing program. Humanists seek to do good without religion. Their ad campaign has received attention from CNN, and The New York Times. Consider Humanism has ads on Television, buses, and newspapers across the nation.

I have watched their press conference videos, and it is upsetting to me because they take many passages from the Bible out of context. Their so called press conference is rather silly, with an audience of what sounds to be one person. They speak with a tone of hatred and malice towards Christians and Muslims. The press conference is filled with loads of scripture taken out of context and references mispronounced. So before you think about giving these people an ounce of credit remember they don't even know what they are talking about. Thankfully, someone at Stand to Reason (str.org), has also addressed this also. As Christians we should be ready to express the truth of the Gospel, by responding to the ideologies of secular society. 1 Peter 3:15

I have registered on their forum as Truth Seeker. I have written many replies and I hope you will read the most notable one on Tolerance. I think my reply conveys what is at the heart of their beliefs and their ridiculous claims.

If you are a humanist, and you think you have the right ideas I would encourage you to ConsiderChristanity by ConsideringTheBible, and by ConsideringTheEvidence.

What is the Gospel?

I wrote this up for a mission trip application and thought I would share:

The story, teachings and life of Jesus Christ. Romans 3:23 says "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". Since we have sinned we cannot have a personal relationship with God unless we establish a relationship with his one and only begotten son (John 3:16). Jesus is God's greatest gift to humanity. Jesus is the only way to have a relationship with God; for Jesus says "I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). It is not by our doings that we have a relationship with Jesus: Ephesians 2:8 says "For it is by grace through faith that you have been saved, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God". We must truly surrender all of our works, our striving to save ourselves, and acknowledge our sinfulness and repent so that we can establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

RE: Gay Marriage It's About Time!

Re: Gay Marriage: It’s About Time – Really?

Brooks Davis stepped on some toes, including my own, in the opinion piece he wrote for the McIntosh Trail.  I considered what Brooks had to say and find him to be lacking proof for his opinion.  It appears to me as though he inaccurately portrays Christianity and the true state of homosexual marriages, not to mention the homosexual agenda. I’m writing for those who read his article and are struggling to understand their position on homosexuality.  I also want to point out some fallacies Brooks has stated.

Brooks’ Lack of Proof:

Brooks states, one cannot force his opinion through the law or otherwise on another person.  However, this statement contradicts everything he is trying to prove. I must ask Brooks what gives him the right to make a law which goes against my beliefs? After all you’re infringing upon my faith and enforcing what you believe upon me.

He suggests that marriage is a simple legal process anyone can perform.  I must ask, what is marriage as a legal thing, if it’s not between one man and one woman?

Under Brooks’ logic anyone could marry anything they wanted. However, he says that it "will not open the door to human-dog or human-Barbie doll unions, because that just sounds ridiculous.”  Where is the proof that this won't happen? Is Brooks just hoping in the best of humanity, the humanity in which he states the divorce rates are close to 50 percent and many adults are on their second, third or even fourth marriage?  I would like to see evidence that weird and extreme things will not progress along with gay marriage.

Brooks’ Fallacies:

I happen to have evidence that the gay community is not just going to stop after pushing for gay marriage. Those in homosexual marriages want children. For example, look at Rosie O'Donnell. She has adopted a child! This also goes to show homosexual families are not natural as the married couple cannot naturally have a child.

The way gay couples view their relationships does not appear natural either.  Jones and Yarhouse, who have written a book on homosexuality, Homosexuality: The Use of Scientific Research in the Church’s Moral Debate, use surveys and scientific evidence to look at homosexuality. This is quoting word for word what they have said about male-male relationships. “Many homosexual males distinguish between emotional fidelity and sexual exclusivity”, so as long as they are not attached to another person its fine to be in as many open relationships as they like. Another survey by the San Francisco State University “has followed 556 male couples for three years — about 50 percent of those surveyed have sex outside their relationships, with the knowledge and approval of their partners.”

I’m not exactly sure what Brooks is trying to say when he says not to look at him in an air-conditioned room or through eyeglasses.  If Brooks is stating that looking through prescription glasses is unnatural because the person has bad vision then, I would like to say that people are born with bad eyesight. People are not born with a homosexual gene, and even if they were it would not justify homosexuality. If some people had a gene which prompted them to murder would it be alright for them to murder?

Brooks Inaccurately Portrays Christianity

Brooks is right, we are all sinners and we fall short of the glory of God as Romans 3:23 clearly states. However, as Christians we no longer follow the Old Testament ceremonial or judicial law, because it has been abrogated by Jesus. However, Christians are still under the moral law of the O.T.  If you want to learn more about this issue please look at this link.  Just to be clear a Christian is not sinning if they don’t follow the ceremonial or judicial law and Leviticus 19:27 falls under ceremonial law.

Some of you might be thinking; does the New Testament mention homosexuality? In fact it does! Here is what God has to say in the New Testament:

“Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.” (Romans 1:24-27 – Italics mine).

Biblically, marriage has been defined as between one man and one woman from the beginning of mankind! God intended it that way! It’s not that we “Don’t want to bother with it”. As in regards to Brooks’ statement that the Bible has been used to justify slavery please read the following article to fully understand what the Bible says about slavery http://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-slavery.html.  Just because the government was wrong on slavery does not mean its wrong about homosexuality. They are two separate issues.

Brooks is correct in assuming a progression of other related laws being struck down. Progressively it will become worse allowing eventually sex with animals and more unnatural relations.

Those Pesky Christians:

Finally, is this what America wants to be known for? Be free and be homosexual! No, I would say that’s not what I want my country to be known for. No one should want total freedom for this country. That’s the reason that the United States of America makes laws, to prohibit people from making decisions that hurt the general public!

Christians are encouraged to participate in politics by the very definition of democracy. Although a physical church may not be influencing the government, the real Church, Christ’s followers are making a stand, a stand that cannot be ignored. No matter what, you will always have to deal with those pesky Christians who vote against what God has deemed wrong.

Standing in Christ

I just finished reading the book “Sit, Walk, Stand” by Watchman Nee, the book goes into what it means to sit, walk and stand in Christ’s power, and also goes into detail about what it truly means to put on the full armor of God and to stand against the enemy. Through this book, Christ revealed to me something that I had never really come to fully understand, as Christians we do not have to be on the offensive to win victory.

Paul says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11).

I find myself struggling against my sin and spiritual persecution trying to press Satan to stop attacking me. I can fast, pray, struggle and resist my sin, but I am really trying to fight something that has already been won.

“Satan’s primary goal is not to get us to sin, but simply to make it easy for us to do so by getting us off the ground of perfect triumph on to which the Lord has brought us”(Watchman Nee). We cannot let Satan advance; we have to realize that Satan was once and for all defeated at Calvary.

We are left with nothing to offensively fight the devil for; Christ has already won the battle. I am left with the full armor of God holding the ground Christ has already won.

This also pertains to Satan’s more visible power here on earth, often I hear about Catholic priests who cast out demons with special prayer or chants. I was also in a Christian book store and saw a book that had special prayers to cast out demons. I think it is quite the contrary; Christ gives every believer the means necessary to cast out demons and that is by His name. Every passage I read pertaining to exorcism or someone being healed after Christ’s ascension is by Christ’s name and not anyone else’s name.

Thankfully God did not say take this armor and this sword now go chase after the devil and make new ground, because I find myself doing it all the time and feeling helpless and Satan’s lies begin to sink into my mind. Praise God we are left to stand against the enemy knowing that we are victorious because Christ is victorious!

Vulnerability

Main Entry: vul·ner·a·ble
Pronunciation: \ˈvəl-n(ə-)rə-bəl, ˈvəl-nər-bəl\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Late Latin vulnerabilis, from Latin vulnerare to wound, from vulner-, vulnus wound; probably akin to Latin vellere to pluck, Greek oulē wound
Date: 1605

1 : capable of being physically or emotionally wounded

2 : open to attack or damage : assailable

God convicted me of the level of vulnerability I am willing to commit into relationships with my friends and even people I don’t know well. I struggle with being vulnerable with those who are not in my d-group. I find the easiest way to have a surface level relationship is to forget about being vulnerable, making myself look unapproachable. I find it easy to cover up my sin and I end up talking more about things Ive conquered rather then what I am struggling with. I love the feeling and the way the Holy Spirit accompanies vulnerability with other believers and even non-believers, but often I find it awkward to do so. However, God is challenging and changing me to stop making surface level relationships and to stop portraying myself as a surface level person.  I feel God uses me when I am vulnerable, with myself, and others. I feel when I am open and honest with others Matthew 18:20 truly comes to life as God says it will.

Radical Love

A few days ago God convicted me of something big. Something at the time that was small to me, but big to Him as all sin is. In my selfish desires I find it easy to blow people off and sometimes even my friends when it comes to certain issues or things they are interested in that I’m not. Sometimes I even blow people off who just want to be around me. Well the other day after hearing Brian Cosby teach on true repentance and radical love I was immediately convicted realizing how much of an impact my life has on my peers and younger kids looking to me as a leader. Usually I find the easiest way out in a situation I’m uncomfortable with is to ignore the person or the true problem. Sometimes to the point when I become a coward for not speaking about the issue or confronting the person.  That night I felt the Holy Spirit move in me a direction that I am uncomfortable with; giving others face time even when I feel they don’t deserve it. Jesus gave me a visualization of what that looks like and how grotesquely wrong I am for rejecting people over the small things. I was reminded of the fact that Jesus loves me all the time and is willing and wants to speak to me in His throne room every single moment of my life, however, I don’t. I even blow Him off by consciously sinning against him. Yet he still loves me and isn’t angered by my foolishness, rather he responds to me in love. That is a love that I will never fully understand, but a love I know that is always with me, a radical love. So I write this challenged by God to set an example and to remember the love He shows me even when I don’t deserve it.
